Who is this course for?

- People interesting in shooting their own work, be they actors, writers or aspiring cinematographers, but don’t know where to get started

- Anyone interested in learning camera fundamentals

- Someone who’s interested in learning how to understand and use all the features of a DSLR camera before buying one

Hardware Breakdown

The first section of the course takes students through camera hardware. You’ll be able to see how aperture, shutters and sensors function using a DSLR camera, then compared with a smartphone.

Exposure Triangle

With the knowledge of how phone camera hardware works, you’ll be taught the exposure triangle to better understand how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work in conjunction with each other rather than individually.

Containers

You’ll also be taught how video containers such as MP4, HVEC and ProRes work and how choosing a container will impact your shoot and editing.

Filmic Pro

The fundamental topics will then be woven into learning about Filmic Pro, a smartphone camera app designed to give you all the features and settings you’d usually find in a DSLR or cinema grade camera.

In this section features are broken down into three parts.

Focus Peaking

Identifying what parts of your shot are in focus.

Finely tune focus using presets to create the perfect moving shot.

Zebra

Understand the light exposure of your shot.

Zebras appear on your screen indicating areas of over exposure (too much light) and under-exposure (too little light).

Reactive

Reactive combines Focus Peaking and Zebra together.

Instead of both features being visible at the same time, either one is enabled when manually changing the focus or exposure.

False Colour

A tool that helps you understand the colour balance of your image.

Introduction of how it operates and how keeping the colour balanced in a shot benefits your editor.

Before the Shoot

How to prepare Filmic Pro for your project and choosing the right settings for your editor.

During the Shoot

Working with exposure, focus and colour balancing while actually shooting your film.

After the Shoot

Viewing and exporting footage.

Filmic Remote

You’ll also become familiar with Filmic Remote, a feature which allows you to use your phone as a camera but control it from another phone or tablet.

Presets

We’ll cover creating presets using Filmic Pro, so that students can set the preferences for different projects and change between them easily.

Practical Shooting

We venture outside and shoot content.

Using their presets students will create different sequences using different settings (that were previously decided when creating presets).

Footage

This footage will be yours to keep and serves the following purpose:

- Actually practicing how to shoot a film

- Putting the previous day’s theory into the real world

- Based on their presets, comparing the differences between different settings to understand what works best and when

Location

The course is facilitated at the State Library Victoria, on Swanston Street across from Melbourne Central.

Day 1 is in Meeting Room 5

Day 2 will meet at the library and walk around the city practicing what you’ve learned.

Live Stream

After completing the course you’ll be eligible to ask questions and have them answered in a monthly live stream.

The course is short with a lot of information, so we get that retention can be a concern. Come along to the 1hr live stream where we can refresh.

Cost

The cost of the course is $300, which covers 8 hours in total, 4 hours each day.
